Carlow Town is situated 84km from Dublin and is a substantial urban area with a population of 23,030 (2011 Census). The River Barrow flows through the town and forms the historic boundary between Counties Laois and Carlow.

The M9 Dublin to Waterford bypasses the town since May 2008 and has greatly reduced the traffic through the town. The N80 National Secondary road skirts the edge of the town. The town is also connected to the national rail network. These transport links have enabled Carlow to become a successful satellite town of Dublin in recent years.
